Why Should You Get a Doubles and Triples Endorsement?

Endorsements open up more opportunities for you as a trucker. With endorsements, you’ll be able to haul more loads and drive different types of vehicles. Keep in mind that you need to have a Class A CDL before applying for the doubles and triples endorsement

What is the doubles and triples endorsement?

The doubles and triples endorsement, also called the “T” endorsement, allows holders to drive a semi truck that has multiple trailers attached, sometimes also called a combination vehicle. Drivers who haul double or triple trailers can earn more per mile than those hauling single trailers. This doesn’t mean that you have to haul multiple trailers, though. In fact, some states restrict the number of trailers, length, and weight of commercial vehicles. Be sure to check local regulations.

How do you get doubles and triples?

Get Your Class A CDL

This step is critical as you can’t get any endorsement without first having your commercial driver’s license. If you’re just starting to explore a career in truck driving, visit www.cdlschool.com for training resources, CDL manual, and CDL practice tests if you still need to get your CDL

Study for the written exam

There are many online options for practice tests for the CDL doubles and triples endorsement. And your employer may offer additional study guides and materials as well to help you get a passing score.

Take the Written Exam

Depending on your state, you may be able to take the general knowledge test at your local DMV, but some states may require you to go to a third-party testing facility to complete the exam.

Practice

While there is no practical driving exam required to obtain your “T” endorsement, you should practice driving your truck with a double or triple trailer a bit before hitting the road. Some states may require that you practice under supervision. Please keep in mind that you must have your endorsement before you can practice hauling doubles or triples.

How many other CDL endorsements are there?

In addition to double/triple trailers “T” endorsement, there are five other endorsements that can be placed on a CDL. These endorsements allow drivers to haul different types of freight and operate different kinds of vehicles.

Tank Vehicle

This is the “N” endorsement and allows holders to operate a truck that hauls a tank. If you’re interested in hauling liquid freight like gas, water, or chemicals, you’ll need this endorsement. You can also haul bulk dry loads like grain in tanker trucks as well. Available to Class A and Class B CDL holders.

Hazardous Materials

This is the “H” endorsement, often called “HazMat,” and allows holders to haul hazardous materials like gas, chemicals, or oil. You’ll need this endorsement before you can haul hazardous materials that are not in tanker trucks. Available to Class A, Class B, and Class C CDL holders.

Tanker/HazMat Combo

This is the “X” endorsement and allows holders to haul hazardous materials in tanker trucks. This is the endorsement you need if you want to, for example, haul gas in a tanker truck. Available to Class A and Class B CDL holders.

Passenger Transport

This is the “P” endorsement and allows holders to transport a certain number of passengers. Commercial passenger vehicles can include tour busses, airport shuttles, etc. The allowed number of passengers varies state to state, so be sure to check local regulations. Available to Class A, Class B, and Class C CDL holders.

School Bus

This is the “S” endorsement and allows holders to operate a school bus. If you’re looking to drive a school bus, you do need to first get the “P” endorsement in addition to this one. Available to Class A, Class B, and Class C CDL holders.

With so many different endorsements available for truck drivers, it’s wise to get at least one to maximize your earning potential. The double and triple trailers endorsement is a good one to start with since it only requires a written test with a passing score and a minimal financial investment. Improve your likelihood of passing the written test by taking doubles & triples practice tests and using study guides beforehand.
