Have you seen all the women truckers on TikTok? They’re out there, and they’re inspiring thousands of women to start their own careers in transportation with their stories.
There are many famous female truckers. You may know Clarissa Rankin, whose TikTok videos showing her life on the road with her big rig, Sparkle, have launched her into the spotlight. She has over 1.5 million followers, and dozens of viral videos on the platform. But she isn’t the only woman truck driver who is finding success on TikTok. Tierra Allen has over 150,000 followers on her TikTok, and her influence is growing every day. These women share their lives and the ups and downs of long-haul trucking in an effort to inspire other young women to join them driving OTR. You can learn a lot from them, especially if you’re new to truck driving or still considering going to driving school and getting your commercial driver’s license (CDL).

According to the Women In Trucking Association, women now make up over 10% of the truck drivers in the United States. There are still far more men truckers than women, but the number of women truck drivers is on the rise as trucking companies push to recruit and retain female talent. Since the number of women in trucking is small, it's a very tightknit group. There are several organizations and online communities out there for female drivers to connect and share tips, resources, and comradery.
It depends on who you ask. Many truck drivers love their jobs, and they would recommend a career in trucking. But some drivers don’t like the long hours, time away from home, or their employers don’t offer the right kinds of benefits, so they’re looking for a change. Trucking is like any industry, and you can absolutely be happy with a career as a truck driver. You get to spend a lot of time on your own, and you don’t have to go to an office every day. And you get to see the country, including parts that many Americans never bother to visit. Lots of truckers also find satisfaction in pursuing hobbies while away from home, and transportation is the lifeblood of America, so it’s hard not to feel a sense of pride in that.
There are definitely risks for female truck drivers on the road, but you can take some basic precautions you can take like observing normal etiquette rules at truck stops, parking in lighted areas, making eye contact with everyone you meet, and wearing sensible shoes. You can also consider taking a self-defense class or asking your employer if they offer resources for women drivers to help them stay safe on the road.
Many women also drive in teams. Driving as part of a team is less lonely, safer, and often means more money per load. If you’re interested in becoming a truck driver but are scared to be out on the road by yourself for weeks on end, team driving might be a good option for you if you know someone else who is also looking to drive as part of a team.
